For many decades, organizations around the country have taught photography to young people, providing access to tools and education, and encouraging use of the medium as a form of social and creative expression. The six selected for this inaugural project of the Lucie Witness initiative, a collaboration between Minor Matters and Lucie Foundation dedicated to fostering intergenerational conversations in photography, are some of the longest-running youth photography programs in the United States.
Isolation restrictions due to COVID-19 immediately changed programs that had long prioritized in-person mentorship and guidance, yet each one of these organizations found ways to continue engaging with their constituents. We are proud to highlight the efforts of these organizations, and the young people they serve, through this unique publication. From poignant portraits to thoughtful abstractions, this timely book holds our emerging state of being through the eyes of our future.
Brief descriptions of each organization’s history, mission, joys, and challenges provides context to the investment these programs are making in the field of photography, and in their communities.
With successful publication, each participating photographer will receive at least two copies of the book; all net proceeds once expenses are covered will be split equally among the organizations, with a priority to provide a cash honorarium to each photographer, and any balance to be used to the institution’s greatest needs.
