For a sales manager or a trucker, a motivational speaker or a musician, there are consistencies within the constant change of life on the road. Each learns to create homes away from home, channeling points of familiarity when, after prolonged movement from venue to venue, one’s sense of time and space inevitably dulls. Bands, like theater troupes and circuses, have a group dynamic layered on top of all that, comprised not only of the musicians but all those who contribute to the daily construction and dismantling of temporary worlds.

Photographer Rachel Demy knows every detail of what it takes to move instruments, cases and crews across the country and around the world to bring musicians and audiences together for a few precious hours. After a decade on the logistics side of managing tours, she laid down her spreadsheets and 16-channel Motorola radio to spend more time with her camera, capturing the liminal moments she had long been observing from her years on the road.

The photographs comprising Between, Everywhere were made over a five-year period touring with Death Cab for Cutie, a band she met first as a fan, and eventually joined as family. A mainstay of the indie music scene, Death Cab for Cutie has been consistently recording and touring for over two decades. Demy’s wry and poignant photographs take viewers behind the scenes and on a journey full of the quiet, the beauty, the monotony and the exhilaration of a veteran band on tour.

RACHEL DEMY (b. 1982, San Diego, California; resides in Seattle) grew up in Portland, Oregon, enamored with the greens and the grays, as well as the melancholic and feral sounds of the Pacific Northwest. After stints as a promoter and a booking agent, she spent over a decade as a tour manager, working with St. Vincent, The Shins, The National, Neko Case and other indie bands, all the while honing her skills as a portrait and documentary photographer. She has toured as a photographer with Death Cab for Cutie since 2015. 

Demy’s work has been published in Rolling Stone, The Fold, Portland Monthly, and The Village Voice, among others. One of her photographs was selected by Photo District News for its Ultimate Music Moment in 2019. Her first solo exhibition, Green Room, 2015, was followed by inclusion of her photographs in many group exhibitions; the most recent was a three-person Pacific Northwest music exhibition in Bremerton, Washington (July 2021). Demy holds a BA in political science from the University of Portland, and in June 2022 will complete her certificate of fine art photography through Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle. Eight-time GRAMMY-nominated rock band DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE formed in Bellingham, WA in 1997. The band is currently comprised of Ben Gibbard (vocals, guitar, piano), Nick Harmer (bass), Dave Depper (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Zac Rae (keyboards, guitar) and Jason McGerr (drums). 

Their 2005 studio release, Plans, proved the band’s popular breakthrough, earning RIAA-platinum certification as well as spawning the chart-topping singles, “Soul Meets Body” and “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” the latter of which was honored with a GRAMMY nomination for Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals, with  Plans also receiving a nod for Best Alternative Album. Their following albums—Narrow Stairs (2008), The Open Door (2009), Codes and Keys (2011), and  Kintsugi (2015) all received various GRAMMY nominations, yielding their fourth straight nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

Death Cab for Cutie’s most recent full-length release, Thank You for Today  (2018), is the sound of a band, twenty years into its evolution, still expanding and refining, uncovering new curves in its signatures, and new sonic corners to explore. The Seattle group’s ninth studio album was heralded by the lead single “Gold Rush,” which reached #1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Songs chart.

In December 2020, ahead of the run-off elections in Georgia, the band released The Georgia E.P., featuring covers of iconic artists from the state. Originally released as a 24-hour Bandcamp exclusive, the EP raised over $100,000 for Fair Fight Action, Stacey Abrams’ voting rights organization promoting fair elections around the country through voter education, election reform, and combating voter suppression.

Throughout the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, lead vocalist and guitarist Benjamin Gibbard helped raise over $250,000 in donations and supplies for various Seattle-area relief organizations via his series of at-home, livestream performances.

In February 2022, Gibbard conceived, curated, and executive-produced Ocean Child: Songs of Yoko Ono – a tribute to the acclaimed singer, songwriter, multimedia artist, and activist. Death Cab for Cutie contributed a cover of “Waiting For The Sunrise;” other artists on the compilation included David Byrne, Japanese Breakfast, The Flaming Lips, and Sharon Van Etten.
